Areas of Study

Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music.

“The term is used in three main ways in music, though all three are interrelated. The first is what is otherwise called ‘rudiments’, currently taught as the elements of notation, of key signatures, of time signatures, of rhythmic notation, and so on. Theory in this sense is treated as the necessary preliminary to the study of harmony, counterpoint, and form. The second is the study of writings about music from ancient times onwards. […] The third is an area of current musicological study that seeks to define processes and general principles in music — a sphere of research that can be distinguished from analysis in that it takes as its starting-point not the individual work or performance but the fundamental materials from which it is built.”

Sight-reading, also called a prima vista (Italian meaning “at first sight”), is the reading and performing of a piece of music or song in music notation that the performer has not seen before. Sight-singing is used to describe a singer who is sight-reading. Both activities require the musician to play or sing the notated rhythms and pitches. Many believe that sight-singing is the more challenging of the two, because the musicians do not have any keys, frets or valves (on keyboard instruments, guitars, and valved brass instruments, respectively) to help them obtain the correct pitches. However, difficulty is related both to the instrument and the difficulty of the piece itself. For instance, sight-reading on a polyphonic instrument, such as the classical guitar, can be more challenging due to the fact that the guitarist has to read polyrhythms and polyphonic passages that can often be played in different positions using different frets.
Drum technique is based on efficiency of movement to get a desired musical effect. We focus on developing power and increasing range of speed and dynamics. These tools help you get around the kit with more finesse and musical possibility. Since every body is different, there is no one “right way” to do anything. We use rudimental studies and work on developing stick control, playing exercises slowly and focusing on efficiency of movement. Areas of technical study include full and half strokes, finger technique, push/pull, and foot technique for the bass drum and high hat with the goal of developing dynamic control and touch.

Technique is a means of gaining more musicality, not of gaining technique for technique’s sake. Playing fast can be great, but the best drummers know when to use their chops. Technique gives us the means to play fast, but it also helps us to switch seamlessly between fast and slow patterns, loud and soft dynamics, and everything in between. The more control of these elements we have, the better we are able to fit into group contexts and blend to make a band sound its very best.

My two (2) kids go to this school for Piano Lessons. It’s a great school with teachers who care and they even got (ONE) of my kids to actually play correctly and she now likes playing the piano. They are strict but have real concern for the students and offer a great environment to excel. I would recommend Donna Lee and her Music School anytime. A+++++++

My son has been taking piano with Miss Donna since he was 7 and my daughter just started. I absolutely love her. She is fantastic with kids and really inspires them to play. She also has a recital that gives the kids a chance to play in front of an audience. She also encourages participation in the Certificate of Merit program. I am so glad we found her and Lee Music School.
